Vasectomy FAQs

Ogden Clinic's Urology team is one of the most trusted in Northern Utah. They not only perform hundreds of successful vasectomies every year, but we also have one of only a few vasectomy reversal specialists in Northern Utah.

How long does a vasectomy take?

A vasectomy typically takes between 10 to 30 minutes to perform.

Is a vasectomy reversible?

In most cases, vasectomies can be reversed. However, the success rate decreases over time, and the likelihood of achieving pregnancy declines.

What are the risks of a vasectomy?

Vasectomies are generally low-risk procedures, but complications can occasionally arise. Potential risks include:

  • Bleeding into the scrotum
  • Infection at the incision site
  • Chronic pain (post-vasectomy pain syndrome)

Will a vasectomy affect my testosterone levels?

No, a vasectomy does not impact testosterone levels and will not affect your sex drive.

Do I need to use contraception after a vasectomy?

Yes. Sperm can remain in the seminal fluid for several months after the procedure. You should use contraception until you have had at least 15–20 ejaculations and a follow-up test to confirm the absence of sperm.

How soon can I have sex after a vasectomy?

You should abstain from sexual activity for at least one week to allow for proper healing. After that, you can resume sexual activity but must continue using contraception until cleared by a doctor.

What is the best age to get a vasectomy?

There is no ideal age for a vasectomy. The decision depends on your personal circumstances and whether you are certain about preventing future pregnancies.

Do I need a referral for a vasectomy?

No referrals are needed for a vasectomy now through the end of March!

Is vasectomy reversal possible if I change my mind about conceiving?

While vasectomy reversal is possible, success rates vary based on how much time has passed since the procedure. Typically, a surgeon will make a small incision on the scrotum to reconnect the Vas Deferens to allow sperm to reenter the seminal fluid. Pregnancy rates after a reversal range from 30% to 90%, depending on the technique used.
