Sleep Studies
Are You Tired of Feeling Tired?
Your outlook on life, productivity, and general health all depend on healthy sleep. It doesn’t take long to notice when your sleep patterns are off, and in the long run, a lack of quality sleep can lead to serious health problems. Chronic sleep disorders can cause hypertension, stroke, heart disease, glucose intolerance, as well as mood and cognitive problems. Fortunately, our Ogden neurologists are sleep specialists who can help restore healthy sleep to people of all ages.
If any of these symptoms inhibit your sleep, contact us today for a closer evaluation:
- Sleep apnea
- Loud or persistent snoring
- Insomnia
- Non-refreshing sleep
- Daytime sleepiness or headaches in the morning
- Restless leg syndrome
Ogden Clinic’s Sleep Center is located inside our Professional Center in Ogden. Our Sleep Lab is designed to help us evaluate your sleep habits and design a treatment plan to restore a restful night’s sleep.
What Happens During a Sleep Study?
If you’re assigned a sleep study, you must come to our Ogden lab shortly before your usual bedtime for the overnight study. Bring comfortable clothing you’d normally sleep in and ensure your hair is washed and dried.
The tech will apply monitors to your body that will measure various activities. These may include:
- Wires with cup electrodes may be attached your head with conductive paste. The electrodes are used to measure brain activity, including the different sleep stages you are entering.
- Wire electrodes may be attached to your face (near the eyes and chin) to reveal muscle activity such as nocturnal teeth grinding and eye movements
- A nasal cannula will measure your breathing.
- A monitor is attached to your finger to detect oxygen levels.
- EKG monitors will show your heart rate and rhythm.
- A small mic may be placed near your throat to detect snoring.
You might be thinking, “How can I possibly fall asleep with so many attachments?” But falling asleep during a sleep study is not as uncomfortable as it seems. Even patients who don’t feel like they receive adequate sleep generally get enough to obtain adequate data for the study.
What Happens After a Sleep Study?
After your sleep study is conducted and the diagnosis has been made, Ogden Clinic’s sleep specialists will design a treatment plan according to your needs. Treatment for sleep disorders varies depending on the cause. Some patients find that a visit to an otolaryngologist (ENT) specialist helps to mitigate snoring. Others find relief through lifestyle changes, medication adjustment, and even specialized equipment such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy for obstructive sleep apnea.
Patient Instructions for Sleep Testing
Sleep Lab Supervisor Paige Iverson walks us through the process of fitting and using their take-home sleep monitor. With correct usage, this machine provides valuable data about breathing and sleep patterns.
