Endocrine Disorders

An endocrine disorder results from the improper function of the endocrine system, which includes the glands that secrete hormones, the receptors that respond to hormones, and the organs that are directly impacted by hormones. At any one of these points, dysfunction can occur and cause widespread effects to other parts of the body.

But treatment options are many. Here are some of the most common endocrine disorders your Ogden Clinic team can help you manage.

Type 1 Diabetes

Treatment typically consists of exercise, a healthy diet, and insulin injections. Your doctor will help you manage your blood glucose levels by monitoring them regularly and helping you follow a targeted diet and exercise plan.

Type 2 Diabetes

Nutrition and diet counseling is usually the best way to manage type 2 diabetes, in addition to taking oral medications or insulin injections. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) may also be prescribed to lower blood pressure.

Gestational Diabetes

Your doctor may recommend monitoring blood glucose levels closely and making changes to diet and lifestyle. In some cases, insulin injections may also be necessary for controlling gestational diabetes.

Eye Disease

Treatment for eye disease depends on the condition and can range from simple lifestyle modifications, such as wearing protective eyewear when outdoors, to more complex treatments like laser surgery.

Kidney Dysfunction

Treatment options can include lifestyle modifications (such as a healthy diet, regular exercise, and avoiding excessive alcohol intake), diuretics, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, calcium channel blockers, or beta-blockers.

Hypertension

Following a low sodium diet, exercising regularly, limiting alcohol consumption, and practicing stress reduction techniques can all help prevent and manage hypertension. In some cases, medication may be necessary.

Dyslipidemia

Dietary changes (such as limiting unhealthy fats) and exercise are the main components of treating dyslipidemia. Other methods may involve taking high doses of fish oil supplements or medications like statins to lower cholesterol levels.

Hyperthyroidism

Antithyroid medications or radioactive iodine therapy are typically used to treat hyperthyroidism. Surgery is also an option for more severe cases.

Hypothyroidism

Treatment for hypothyroidism includes hormone replacement therapy with levothyroxine (synthetic thyroid hormone). Much like hyperthyroidism, surgery may be needed in severe cases.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

Treatments vary depending on the individual but commonly involve medications, such as birth control pills, anti-androgens, or metformin to help regulate hormones and reduce symptoms associated with PCOS.

Hypogonadism

Hormone therapy is typically recommended to restore normal levels of testosterone in men living with hypogonadism. This involves replacing the deficient hormones with synthetic hormones. Testosterone is usually given in the form of an injection, patch, or gel, while other hormones may be prescribed as pills.
