Procedure - NovaSure®

Do you have painful periods accompanied by heavy bleeding? Many women face periods that last for more than seven days and up to two weeks, which are characterized by a heavy flow, painful cramps, and interference with normal daily activities. This is a common occurrence that becomes prevalent for women in their 30s and 40s. To reduce the pain and anxiety that comes with heavy periods, a specialist at Ogden Clinic in Utah may recommend a NovaSure® endometrial ablation procedure.

What is NovaSure®?

NovaSure® is a simple and quick one-time procedure used to remove the uterine lining, known as the endometrium, which causes heavy menstrual bleeding. This procedure only takes about 5 minutes and can be done right in your doctor’s office. There is no incision required and your uterus is left completely intact. For most women, NovaSure® drastically reduces heavy bleeding, and in some cases, stops it altogether.

How It Works

To begin, your doctor will slightly open your cervix (the opening to the uterus) and insert a slim wand. He/she will then spread a triangular-shaped netted device into your uterus. The netting will then expand to fit the size and shape of your uterus. Your doctor will use radiofrequency energy transmitted through the netting to remove the endometrium. The device is then pulled back into the wand and both the netting and endometrium are removed from your uterus. Some minor side effects include cramping, nausea, spotting, and discharge, but these should subside quickly.

Is NovaSure® Right for Me?

NovaSure® endometrial ablation is appropriate for premenopausal women who no longer wish to have children. Getting pregnant following this procedure is dangerous for both mother and fetus, so if you wish to continue having children, it is important to talk to your doctor about other solutions for issues with heavy bleeding. NovaSure® is also not appropriate for women with uterine cancer, urinary or pelvic infections, or those who have an IUD.
