Procedure - Newborn Care

Going home with a new baby is exciting, but it can also be nerve-wracking. In order to prepare, it’s a good idea to start looking for a pediatrician about three months before your baby is due.

Your pediatrician will visit you and your baby within 24 hours after your baby is born. During this first visit, your pediatrician will:

  • Take your baby’s temperature
  • Check skin color for signs of jaundice
  • Measure your baby’s length, weight, and head circumference
  • Measure your baby’s heart rate and breathing
  • Apply ointment or eye drops to protect against eye infections

Your baby’s physician will likely encourage you to schedule an exam at the doctor’s office within three to five days of birth. During this visit, the doctor will likely perform a complete physical examination, including observing your newborn’s reflexes, hearing, and vision. You might also discuss the results of the screening tests done right after birth. Your pediatrician will also give instructions and make recommendations regarding baby care, being sure to address your questions and concerns.
