Procedure - Migraine & Chronic Headaches

Suffering with migraines or chronic headaches can be debilitating for many people. These conditions are accompanied by extreme pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. This can lead to an inability to work or function throughout the day. For this reason, Ogden Clinic Neurology offers people in Utah treatment options for migraine and chronic headaches.

Migraines tend to develop in childhood, adolescence, or early adulthood. They are characterized by severe pain and throbbing on one side of the head. Many people who experience migraines go through four stages before, during, and after the migraine occurrence. These stages each have their own symptoms that include neck stiffness, increased thirst, visual disturbances, pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, moodiness, and weakness. There are a variety of risk factors that can cause a migraine including:

  • Food and food additives
  • Hormonal changes
  • Stress
  • Alcohol
  • Poor sleep patterns
  • Changes in the environment
  • Family history

After diagnosing your migraine condition, an Ogden Clinic neurologist can prescribe a course of treatment. The most common treatments are pain-relieving and preventative medications. Pain-relieving medications are taken during a migraine to relieve symptoms, while preventative medications are taken daily to reduce the severity and frequency of migraines.

Chronic Headaches

Chronic headaches occur 15 days or more per month, with the condition lasting for at least three months. These headaches can be short or long-lasting, with longer symptoms going on for more than four hours at a time. Chronic headaches are characterized as one of four types:

  • Chronic migraine
  • Chronic tension-type headache
  • Daily persistent headache
  • Hemicrania Continua

These types of headaches can be caused by brain injuries, tumors, or infections, but generally, the exact cause is not identifiable. Your doctor will try to find an underlying cause of the headaches and treat it, otherwise, pain medications will be prescribed to reduce and prevent the symptoms of chronic headaches.

Living with the pain of a migraine or chronic headaches can be exhausting and disabling. If you are ready to find a solution for your migraine and chronic headaches, contact Ogden Clinic Neurology to schedule an appointment in Utah today.
