Procedure - ADHD

ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. ADHD was formerly called ADD (attention deficit disorder) but is now widely referred to as ADHD. Both children and adults can be affected by ADHD although symptoms usually present problems during childhood. The symptoms of ADHD include hyperactivity, impulsiveness, or consistent inattentiveness. In both adults and kids, treatment requires a multi-pronged approach.

ADHD in Children

Experts know a great deal about treating childhood ADHD and the research literature about adult treatment is growing as well. There are currently three treatments proven to be effective for ADHD: Behavior modification, medication, or a combination of the two. Most children are prescribed both modalities: behavior modification in conjunction with medication to remedy the symptoms. Children under age 6 will be prescribed behavior therapy as the first line of treatment before medication is considered.

Parents often feel concerned when their child receives an ADHD diagnosis, but it’s important to understand that this condition is manageable. Parents can and should work closely with everyone involved in their child’s life, whether it’s a therapist, healthcare provider, a teacher, and other family members.

ADHD in Adults

If you’ve been diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, your Ogden Clinic healthcare provider will prescribe and carefully monitor medication — typically a stimulant. The same medications used for childhood ADHD are effective for adults. Like children, behavior modifications and cognitive behavioral therapy are also used alongside medication for the best outcomes.
